Funny stuff. There was a movie in the 80's called Soul man where a white MC outright changed into a Black man that caused outrage at the time. I say this because I remember a segment that was on 60 minutes ages ago where they talked about Michael Jackson having vitiligo and they used footage from the movie, which looking back seemed like it had recontextualized the initial outrage of the film. My point is that it's weird how given time, outlook on things change, and a steaming pile that this book seems to be might one day be read by someone and considered a 10/10 masterpiece.

That's interesting, I had never heard of that movie. It's definitely neat how time can recontextualize media (I also love when a work gets re-canonized as "ahead of it's time"). I guess we'll see how time treats this book. It'd be pretty funny if I'll have to later apologize for being so harsh on it, hahaha

One silver lining is between writing these I've been casually reading about vitiligo and informing myself on the subject, since I don't just want to rely 100% on my gut instinct of "this feels wrong".

There was an artist (with vitiligo) on Reddit looking to fundraise for vitiligo foundations focused on acceptance, not a cure. Apparently all of them give at least a little to researching a cure? There's lots of mixed feelings on acceptance/cure mindset (and hey, I don't have it, I won't say it's wrong to look for a cure). But I wish I could find an 100% acceptance-based foundation to signal boost, it's interesting it doesn't seem to exist
