I’m writing this with a 10 minute deadline before anyone (Whytmanga, saturday AM) tries to gaslight me.
If you’re new here: about two months ago, I joined WhytManga’s paid tier on YouTube, since I wanted a membership shoutout. I’ve been pretty vocal on this Substack and my YouTube channel about how Whyt’s membership over-promises and under-delivers.
I’ve made an especially big fuss about not getting my member shoutout.
This image is from my last post on this Substack:
I’m happy to share this image is now out of date (I still have a crush though, don’t worry about that).
Here’s the current version of the “Lord” ($9.99, second highest) membership level:
I’m going to go through the updates today. Let’s start with the big one:
1: Whytmanga is making a Cowboy Manga and streaming the process.
I haven’t watched the Cowboy Manga Streams in their entirety yet, but I’ve gone to the stream transcripts, ctrl+f “shout out” and related terms/common auto transcript misspellings. I couldn’t find any for me, Tapirclip.
There’s also a lot of members-only posts related to this Exciting New Cowboy Manga (mostly text posts, a few drawings) I think it’s all kinda dorky but whatever. We can no longer dock him points for scarce members-only posts.
Although, I do think it is Pretty Hilarious that he started this Cowboy Manga Arc immediately after I joined.
2: Member Shout-outs now revised to include an addendum
This is the big one.
It now says:
Member Shout-outs
Will give general shout outs, thanking everyone on this level for their support.
I am guessing “general shout outs” is meant to distinguish from individual/personalized shoutouts. Meaning my member shoutout is never coming.
I also wonder how the hell this qualifies as a perk. If everyone at this level gets a shoutout, um… if you’re not going to do individual shoutouts then how is this a benefit?
Let’s take this to its most literal and funniest hypothetical.
Picture it: Every stream starts with Whyt saying “If you don’t give me at least $9.99 a month you can go to hell. Everyone who’s giving me at least $9.99 is cool, shoutout to you.”
That’s the only way this makes sense as a perk.
3: there is no number three, unless,
Members are still missing Members only-polls, early access to new videos, exclusive members-only videos.
So, uhh, maybe he should work on that.
I THINK, perhaps, the highest level (Dark Lord, $24.99/month) was changed, but I don’t have the screenshots to prove it. Check this out:
“I reserve the right not to for any reason” seems to be new
The 20+ members specification under Manga Book Club is also new. Makes sense, since it's more of a date than a book club if there’s under 20 people.
I should also note that I haven’t noticed any changes to Whyt’s patreon levels or tiers, which offer similar rewards.
Coda: So what does this all mean???
I’m taking this as pretty clear sign I should both cool it and scram.
I won’t say this is a total embargo on SatAm content since they’re an endless well of terrible manga and easy dunks. It’s only a matter of time until they give a midwit opinion on Trending Thing and I can reply on why their take was Bad, actually.
(basically, I expect another incident like this to happen again soon).
I’ve downgraded to the $2.99 level since “member shout out” was the big selling point for the $9.99 level. Whyt’s revised the language to suggest this isn’t going to happen in any meaningful way.
(I didn’t outright quit because his posts on his cowboy manga are absolutely fucking hilarious and worth every penny).
I won’t make any promises but I can say I’m burned out on the subject for now. I know I promised more of the Apple Black review in January but I’m putting a hold on that.
But if anyone does join WhytManga’s membership and leaves a comment, please ask him how to play Nuori.
If I were him, I'd just give you a shoutout with a cheeky little comment acknowledging the effort you put into criticism. But he seems far too self-serious to do that.
